Partnership in Action for Global Maritime Safety
On 5th November 2025, IMSO observed a contingency exercise with the Inmarsat Maritime Safety team to test operational readiness and verify Inmarsat backup communications within the GMDSS framework. As an IMO-recognized service provider in the GMDSS, Inmarsat continues to play an essential role in supporting global maritime safety services.
A joint Public Services Committee meeting followed, chaired by Laurent Parenté, Director General of IMSO. The meeting reviewed technical outcomes, discussed future developments of the GMDSS and examined how emerging technologies could make the system more predictive and resilient. It also addressed wider cooperation on safety communications, notably the protection of spectrum used for maritime safety services.
The PSC meeting was attended by Ben Palmer OBE, newly appointed President, Global Affairs (Viasat), John Dodd, Director of Maritime Safety, Alison Horrocks, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer and Peter Broadhurst, Vice President Maritime Safety & Regulatory.
IMSO’s operational work and coordination with recognized service providers are supported by its technical team, including Halil Keskin (Head of Operational Seervices) and Philip Lane (GMDSS Officer), whose expertise ensures the continued effectiveness of IMSO’s oversight function.
IMSO also extends its best wishes to Peter on his upcoming retirement, acknowledging his long-standing commitment to safety and his outstanding contribution to maritime communications throughout his career.
