Protecting L-Band Spectrum for Maritime Safety
Protecting L-Band Spectrum for Maritime Safety
IMSO was pleased to contribute to the 2nd Space Policy Conference (ISPC‑25) held in New Delhi on 24–25 July 2025, co-organised by the ITU-APT Foundation of India and Forum Global.
Mr Laurent Parenté, Director General of IMSO, delivered a keynote address during Session 2: Spectrum Issues for Satellite Services, titled:
“Preserving an Interference-Free Environment for the GMDSS”.
His presentation focused on the critical need to preserve L-band radio frequencies for satellite communications that support safety services, particularly within the framework of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). The Director General highlighted the risks posed by harmful interference, the importance of stable regulatory frameworks and the value of collaboration between industry, regulators and international bodies.
As part of its mandate to oversee satellite providers recognised by the International Maritime Organization for the GMDSS, IMSO plays an institutional role in supporting efforts to protect the spectrum relied upon by maritime mobile satellites safety services.
