The Director General of IMSO, in acting upon the mandate established at The IMO Maritime Safety Committee, ninety-fourth session in November 2014, at which it was agreed that IMSO should undertake the technical and operational evaluation of the Iridium mobile satellite system to assess its compliance with the relevant criteria for recognition as a GMDSS provider, convened a meeting of the Group of Experts on the 11 and 12 November, 2015. This meeting was held at the IMO Headquarters in London, with the primary purpose being to review and finalise the group’s assessment report in readiness for imminent submission to the 3rd Session of the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communication and Search and Rescue (NCSR).

The assessment report would present technical and operational aspects, and is a culmination of several meeting of the group of experts, exchanges of correspondence, and two site visits to IRIDIUM, in the past several months.
