IMSO visits the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Fareham

26 October 2026

On Monday 26 October 2026, the IMSO Directorate visited the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Fareham to exchange views on current issues concerning satellite services used for search and rescue.

Mr. Halil Keskin, Mr. Pier Taranti and Mr. Philip Lane met with the JRCC team before receiving an introduction to search and rescue coordination in the United Kingdom and a tour of the operations room.

For IMSO, which oversees the performance of recognised satellite service providers within the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), direct contact with rescue coordination centres is particularly valuable. It helps to connect our oversight work with the practical needs of those who receive distress alerts and coordinate the response at sea.

Reliable satellite communications are essential and their purpose is ultimately operational: ensuring that a distress alert reaches those who can act on it, and that communications remain available throughout all stages of the search and rescue process.

Our thanks to the JRCC team for welcoming our colleagues and sharing their experience.
