A timely reflection on the future of the GMDSS in a rapidly evolving satellite landscape

16 May 2025

On 14 May, the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) took part in the IMO’s NCSR Sub-Committee with a presentation entitled “The Future of the GMDSS in a Changing Satellite Communications Landscape”, led by Director General Laurent Parenté, with contributions from Halil Keskin, Peter Broadhurst and Mark Lawson.

The aim of the presentation was to stimulate reflection on whether, in light of the fast-paced growth of satellite technologies and the transformation of the market, there may come a time when the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) itself will need to evolve to remain fit for purpose.

We thank all delegations for their interest and engagement in what could be the beginning of a broader discussion on the future of maritime safety and satellite governance.
