IMSO hosts IMLI students
IMSO welcomed a group of 11 students from the International Maritime Law Institute (IMO IMLI ), accompanied by its Director, Norman Martinez, for a visit to its offices.
The session focused on current developments in satellite communications for maritime safety, including the functioning of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and the role of recognized providers. It also addressed the increasing importance of protecting radio spectrum used for maritime safety services, in a context of growing demand and evolving technologies.
Part of the discussion was dedicated to the LRIT system, its government-to-government architecture, and its reliability, particularly in the current geopolitical environment, where secure and controlled access to ship position information remains essential. The visit concluded with an exchange with students on the regulatory and operational aspects of these systems. IMSO thanks the IMLI students and the Institute for this constructive visit.
