Satellite communications play a vital role in safeguarding lives at sea

IMSO recently participated in contingency exercises conducted by the two IMO-recognized GMDSS providers, Viasat Inmarsat and Iridium, to demonstrate their ability to restore GMDSS services within the one-hour timeframe required under International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.

These exercises are an important element of the oversight framework established by IMO to ensure the continued availability and resilience of maritime safety communications. They provide assurance that, even in the event of a major service disruption, critical distress and safety communications can be restored rapidly and effectively.

The successful completion of these exercises reflects the professionalism and technical expertise of the teams involved, whose work and commitments contribute directly to the protection of seafarers worldwide.

Satellite communications have become an indispensable component of the global maritime safety architecture. Every day, they enable ships operating far beyond the reach of terrestrial networks to remain connected to safety services, receive vital maritime safety information, and, when necessary, alert search and rescue authorities in times of distress. In such circumstances, these systems are more than a communications service, they are a lifeline.

IMSO acknowledges the dedication of all those who participated in these exercises and remains committed to ensuring that the GMDSS continues to provide reliable and resilient services for the international maritime community.
