Exploring the Institutional Framework of the GMDSS
Exploring the Institutional Framework of the GMDSS
IMSO Director General Laurent Parenté welcomed ten Inmarsat experts to IMSO for a dedicated familiarisation visit on the respective roles of IMSO and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
The discussions addressed Inmarsat’s essential contribution to the GMDSS, together with the institutional and regulatory framework within which this vital public safety service is delivered.
Organized by the Viasat Inmarsat Maritime Safety team, led by John Dodd, the visit formed part of its wider engagement across Inmarsat globally, providing colleagues from different areas of the company with an opportunity to explore the institutional and regulatory dimensions of Inmarsat’s role in the GMDSS.
The programme also provided an opportunity for discussion on the operational, technical, institutional and regulatory aspects of the system, and on their importance for the continued reliable delivery of maritime distress and safety communications and, ultimately, for the protection of life at sea.
