IMSO attends 18th session of the World-Wide Navigational Warning Service (WWNWS) Sub-Committee in Cadiz, Spain

IMSO participated in the 18th session of the World-Wide Navigational Warning Service (WWNWS) Sub-Committee, held in Cádiz, Spain, from 14 to 18 September 2026. The Organization was represented by Technical Officer, Mr Philip Lane.

The Sub-Committee guides and monitors the WWNWS on matters related to the dissemination of Maritime Safety Information (MSI) to NAVAREAs, Sub-areas and coastal areas.

IMSO presented a report on the performance and compliance of Inmarsat and Iridium, which are recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to provide satellite services within the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). Updates were also provided on related issues such as spectrum and orbit protection and on the regulatory context for the implementation of China’s BeiDou Message Service System (BDMSS) as an operational provider of satellite services within the GMDSS.

The meeting progressed with the development of the IHO’s S-124 data format for navigation warnings, which will enable them to be displayed on Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), and considered matters related to the distribution of such information.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for IMSO to continue to maintain and strengthen its relationship with the organizations and people that rely on the recognized satellite providers to enable the delivery of vital navigational information which aims to prevent maritime casualties.
