IMSO Celebrates International Day for Women in Maritime 2024
The International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) proudly participated in the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) annual event celebrating International Day for Women in Maritime. This significant event, held at the IMO headquarters in London, highlighted the essential contributions of women in the maritime industry and emphasized the ongoing need for gender equality and diversity within the sector.
The theme of 2024’s International Day for Women in Maritime was ‘Safe Horizons: Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety’ and a symposium was held to discuss issues of safety in relation to women working in the maritime industry and whilst at sea. Participants included maritime professionals, industry leaders, policymakers, and representatives from various international organizations.
During the panel discussion at the symposium experts from across the maritime industry shared insights on promoting gender equality, creating inclusive workplaces, and advancing women’s leadership in maritime professions.
The day also included a Gender Equality Award Ceremony. IMSO was delighted to join colleagues in congratulating Ms. Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou of Cyprus who has made a remarkable contribution to gender equality in the maritime industry during her career as President of Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA).

Women play a pivotal role in the maritime industry, and their contributions are invaluable. IMSO is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where women can thrive and lead.
IMSO is also actively participating in the IMOGender programme, a mentorship scheme developed by IMO for female students of the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) and the World Maritime University (WMU), since 2022. Under this initiative, three of IMSO’s senior management team are currently mentoring students.
IMSO’s participation in the International Day for Women Maritime event reaffirms the Organization’s dedication to fostering diversity and inclusion within the maritime community.
